In this thesis, I study skin lesion detection and its applications to skin cancer diagnosis. A skin lesion detection algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based color information and threshold. For the proposed algorithm, several color spaces are studied and the detection results are compared. Experimental results show that YUV color space can achieve the best performance. Besides, I develop a distance histogram based threshold selection method and the method is proven to be better than other adaptive threshold selection methods for color detection. Besides the detection algorithms, I also investigate GPU speed-up techniques for skin lesion extraction and the results show that GPU has potential applications in speeding-up skin lesion extraction. Based on the skin lesion detection algorithms proposed, I developed a mobile-based skin cancer diagnosis application. In this application, the user with an iPhone installed with the proposed application can use the iPhone as a diagnosis tool to find the potential skin lesions in a persons\u27 skin and compare the skin lesions detected by the iPhone with the skin lesions stored in a database in a remote server

A mobile system for skin cancer diagnosis and monitoring

    No full text
In this paper, we propose a mobile system for aiding doctors in skin cancer diagnosis and other persons in skin cancer monitoring. The basic idea is to use image retrieval techniques to help the users to find the similar skin cancer cases stored in a database by using smart phones. The query image can be taken by a smart phone from a patient or can be uploaded from other resources. The shapes of the skin lesions are used for matching two skin lesions, which are segmented from skin images using the skin lesion extraction method developed in 1. The features used in the proposed system are obtained by Fourier descriptor. A prototype application has been developed and can be installed in an iPhone. In this application, the iPhone users can use the iPhone as a diagnosis tool to find the potential skin lesions in a persons\u27 skin and compare the skin lesions detected by the iPhone with the skin lesions stored in a database in a remote server. 漏 2014 SPIE

Automatic crack detection and segmetnation using a hybrid algorithm for road distress analysis

In this paper, we investigate advanced image processing technologies to detect cracks for road distress analysis. An algorithm which can detect and segment cracks effectively is proposed. The proposed algorithm is a hybrid crack detection and segmentation algorithm. In the proposed detection and segmentation algorithm, we first use histogram based thresholding method to get the rough locations of the cracks and then mathematics morphology technologies and B-spline based snake model based technology are used to refine the locations of the cracks. We conducted experiments on 10 images with different types of cracks and experimental results show that the proposed technologies can be used for find the cracks effectively. 漏 2013 IEEE

Fundamental Properties of the CH藱藱藱O Interaction: Is It a True Hydrogen Bond?

    No full text
Ab initio calculations are used to analyze the CH路路路O interaction between FnH3-nCH as proton donor and H2O, CH3OH, and H2CO as acceptor. The interaction is quite weak with CH4 as donor but is enhanced by 1 kcal/mol with each F added to the donor. The CH路路路O interaction behaves very much like a conventional OH路路路O H-bond in most respects, including shifts in electron density that accompany the formation of the bond and the magnitudes of the various components of the interaction energy. The two sorts of H-bonds also gravitate toward a similar equilibrium geometry and are comparably sensitive to deformations from that structure. In a quantitative sense, while both CH路路路O and OH路路路O prefer a linear configuration, the former is somewhat more easily bent and is less sensitive to stretches from its equilibrium H-bond length. Whereas the OH bond has been shown to stretch and undergo a red shift in its vibrational frequency upon formation of a H-bond, the CH bond of the molecules studied here follows the opposite trend, a contraction and a blue shift. Analysis demonstrates that this opposite pattern is not due to any fundamental distinction between the two interactions, since the same sets of forces are acting on both. It is concluded that the CH路路路O interaction can, indeed, be categorized as a true H-bond

Determination of the number of (3686)\psi(3686) events at BESIII

The numbers of 蠄(3686) events accumulated by the BESIII detector for the data taken during 2009 and 2012 are determined to be and , respectively, by counting inclusive hadronic events, where the uncertainties are systematic and the statistical uncertainties are negligible. The number of events for the sample taken in 2009 is consistent with that of the previous measurement. The total number of 蠄(3686) events for the two data taking periods is
